How Camp Changed My Life
Cassidy Hyde | August 28, 2018
The kids of Kids Cancer Alliance have changed my life and made me who I am today. I found out about Kids Cancer Alliance by chance when the Executive Director spoke at a conference I was attending in college. After talking with her, I knew I had to be a part of whatever that “camp magic” was!
My first year volunteering at Indian Summer Sibling & Oncology Camps was incredible and I was instantly hooked! I now spend every day looking forward to the best weeks of the year; Indian Summer Camps and anytime I get to see the Kids Cancer Alliance family! In addition, I love giving back to KCA throughout the year as part of the Camp Planning Committee and as a member of the “Wine Women & Shoes Lexington” Committee.
So many lives are affected by cancer in our world, and the resiliency, passion, strength, beauty and grace that these kids embody is nothing short of life-changing. They have shaped me into who I am today and I am forever grateful for that. I now strive for that same outlook on life that the kids have. I am still not sure what I did to deserve the amazing KCA family I have come to know and love, but every day I am reminded how blessed I am to be a part of something bigger than myself and bigger than cancer. For those that have lost the battle, together we will win the war.
People always say that if you watch a child battle cancer it will change your life, and they are right. Thank you for this experience, Kids Cancer Alliance!
If you would like to have an experience like Cassidy’s, volunteer applications are now open for each of the four Indian Summer Camp 2018 weeks. Join us in making a difference in the lives of children with cancer.
